Johann Sebastian Bach’s epic B Minor Mass is Benson Choral Society’s next production in Dorchester Abbey on Saturday 25 November at 7.30 pm.
Bach assembled this work towards the end of his life in 1748-9, incorporating music he had written for various occasions up to 30 years earlier, and it can be regarded as a compendium of Bach’s ‘greatest choral hits’. Still, at a deeper level it makes a compelling and cohesive whole. A towering masterpiece, it has so many great moments from the plaintive opening ‘Kyrie’ to the bell-like tolling of the triumphant ‘Sanctus’ that every choir gets excited at the prospect of singing it – which we are sure will come across to our audience.
This performance promises to be special in a number of ways. As well as 4 distinguished professional solo singers, we have for the first time the Oxford-based period orchestra, Instruments of Time & Truth. We’ve had a glorious year with Steven Grahl as our Musical Director, and this will be his last concert with us before heading to Trinity College, Cambridge in 2024. So it will be a night to remember!
This concert is dedicated to Stephanie Martin, our much-loved Tickets and Front of House secretary who did so much to support the society until her tragically early death in March this year.
Tickets are £20 (reserved) and £17 (unreserved) online via www.bensonchoralsociety.org.uk*. Don’t delay getting tickets, it will be popular! (tickets on sale to BCS Friends now and to the general public from 14th October).
